Amazon EC2, Amazon Web Services

Establishing connection to AMI

Amazon Web Services

Ever trying to connect to Amazon Machine Image over SSH? Then you should read this. The username of AMI’s user is bitnami, at least for Bitnami Ubuntu images. I wont write specific instructions how to connect for Unix and Windows, as there are many other resources doing that. However I will describe possible issues that can occur with using Amazon EC2 services.

  1. Figure out what username exists in Amazon Machine Image.

Connecting with instructions provided by Amazon (right-click on EC2 running instance and select connect) does not always work. Common issue is probably wrong username. First try running ssh client with -v flag (verbose) and find probable cause. If returned error is “Permission denied (publickey)”, than you should check your username. For Bitnami AMI’s you should try “bitnami”.
